How do they make those Balloon Animals? By Holly Prescott / T/A Jolly Holly the Clown Ever wonder how children’s entertainers make those wonderful balloon sculptures? Performers can create anything from cartoon parodies to motocycles with balloons. They wow audiences with their witty banter and awesome repertoire. It is also a great hobby.
To begin, it is important to have the right balloons. Ordinary balloons purchased at a supermarket or drug store simply won’t work right. The “260” of pencil balloon is themain balloon that twisters use --in fact some balloon twisters ONLY use the “260”. It is long and skinny. You can make almost anything from this balloon. I suggest that you use a balloon pump to inflate balloons – for two reasons. First, it is more sanitary than putting a balloon in your mouth and secondly, it is safer. Inhaling a broken balloon is a huge choking hazard. Take your “260” and inflate in 2/3’s of the way and knot the end. At the knotted end twist off 3 sections of balloon each about 3 inches. Always remember to twist each section in the same direction. Now, lock twist the 2nd and thirds section together and presto! – you have a head and a set of ears – the beginning of most balloon animals. Not very easy, was it? Most children’s entertainers – or ‘twisters’ as we sometimes like to be called, attend workshops, clinics and conventions to hone their craft.
