Keeping Fit with Misty Jaymes

It seems like, as adults, everywhere we look, the fitness industry is introducing another piece of equipment, a new fitness craze, or a new way to lose weight or stay healthy.  But what about our kids?  Its vital that we educate our kids about fitness while they're young to provide them with the tools they'll need as they grow up.  The most important factor in getting your child off the couch or out from the computer screen is FUN!  Incorporating some fun activities (disguised as fitness!) into their daily or weekend routine can be very easy. And when you motivate your child to stay fit, they'll be happier, healthier and more focused.   Here are a few ideas:

Hike and Hunt - This is an easy fitness activity that gets your kids outside and keeps them occupied for hours.  Teach them to keep their eyes open to the great outdoors.  Make up a list of things for them to search for.  Give them clues.  And watch how excited they become!  Make it a group activity and invite some of their friends along!  Not only will you help them appreciate the wonders of nature, but they'll get their lungs and muscles moving thanks to a great hike in the beautiful outdoors!

Ten Penny Pickup - This activity teaches dexterity and balance!  Drop ten pennies on the floor and have your child pick up the pennies with their toes and put them in a bowl. And to make it more fun, do this activity together or with a few of their friends, and have a little healthy competeition to see who finishes first!

Dance Party - Who doesn't like a dance party!  Make a mix of your child's favorite songs or wait for one they like to come on the radio. Have them begin to dance nonstop to the beat of the tune. Tell them to lift their legs, swing their arms, leap and twirl in the air. It doesn't really matter what they do, so long as they keep their body in constant motion for the entire length of the song!

Get creative, have fun, and get those kids MOVING!  You'll all enjoy the time you're spending together, and they'll be healthier for it!
